WWDC 2008: The “Stevenote” Recap
Crowds were cheering at today’s “Stevenote” during the 2008 Worldwide Developers Conference. The event has revealed many truths to rumors that have been surfacing for weeks now. Steve Jobs gave quite the show, and there was even a performance of “It’s a Small World” before the most significant announcements. Not too many surprises, but still an impressive showing.
The 10.6 version of Mac OS X will be called Snow Leopard. Pricing and availability is not confirmed. I have seen the Macworld 2009 event mentioned as the target.
The announced MobileMe service will replace the .mac service. A 60-day free trial will be provided with the iPhone in July, and .mac subscribers will automatically be upgraded for free.
GPS capability is coming to the 3G IPhone. GPS manufacturers like Garmin and TomTom are, most likely, thinking about ways to compete. The GPS functionality has been said to use less battery life as it is only enabled when needed.
The iPhone 3G 8 GB version will cost—at most—$199 in 22 countries. The 16 GB and 32 GB will be $299 and $399 respectively. The $199 price-point sounds very appealing, but it will require a new two-year contract with AT&T in the United States.
Many iPhone applications will be around $10, and developers will take 70% of the profits (as opposed to the rumored 50%). Many developers will be glad to hear that there is no charge for free applications on the iPhone 3G. It really is a solid opportunity for the iPhone’s development community, and everyone will benefit from this.
The iPhone 3G 8 GB, 16 GB, and 32 GB versions will be available on July 11th. People might be lining up, again, for the big release date.
Remaining Questions
How much will AT&T charge for the iPhone 3G data plan?
How much will Snow Leopard cost?
How will the competition—like Research In Motion and Nokia—react?
Recap
There was nothing absolutely startling, and the lack of announcements regarding Mac computers and iPods seems to have left Apple investors in a neutral state. Regardless, it was still a good showing—there was just enough to get people excited all over again.
